In this article. I’ll quickly explain how to install a WordPress.org theme. Being one of the best Content Management Systems out there, WordPress has a billion of themes available (premium and free themes) to choose from. Installing a WordPress themes can be as easy as installing any plugin, and I’ll show you how to do it in 3 minutes.
OK, I’ve got my new theme. Now what?
So you’ve got your brand new WordPress Premium Theme and you’re ready to install it and start customizing it to your needs. Supposing you already installed WordPress in your Host, what you need to do now is to open the Dashboard and go to the Appearance Menu. You’ll find 6 different categories including Themes, Widgets and Menus. Click on the Themes category like I did on the following screenshot:
A new menu will open right away. This is the WordPress Themes Menu. Here, you can search, upload and install different themes according to your needs. In this example, I’m counting on you to have the theme already, but if you don’t, you can always use the search function or browse the Featured Themes.
So go to the Install Themes Tab and then click the upload button as shown in the picture:
So now you’ve go to upload your WordPress Theme. Click on the Choose File Button and select your theme from your Hard Drive.
Warning: Note that the theme must be on a zip file. Don’t unzip it before uploading. Once selected, click the Install Now button and wait a few seconds or minutes until it finishes the process.
You can also manually upload your theme via FTP or going to your hosts directory, but if you aren’t a tech savvy guy/girl, I wouldn’t recommend doing this.
OK, you’re almost there! Now you’ve got to activate your theme. Return to the Themes Main Menu and select the uploaded theme (there might be more than one including WordPress examples) and click on Preview to see how your site looks like with the theme. If you’re happy wit it, then click on activate. If you’re not, don’t worry. You can always change or modify your WordPress Theme depending on your needs.
In fact, as this is the first time you install your theme, you probably have some work to do with your theme to customize it according to your needs.
Get a Premium Theme
Considering you’re already paying a hist and a domain, I get the overall idea of downloading a free wordpress theme. Initially, it might be fine, but always consider moving to a Premium Theme if you want to go pro.
And I hear you ask: Why?
- Better design and exclusivity: This means you can get a design that isn’t being used by 1,000 people already.
- Better customization options and SEO: Yes, you can get more options and even SEO capabilities directly on your theme
- Tech support: In case you buy one from a recognized enterprise, you’ll have a full team backing up you when you need it.
Was it that simple? Yes!
So now you can go ahead and customize your WordPress Theme. Feel free to check every option out there and don’t forget to ask if you have any questions about it.
Your theme is like your car. You’ll use it everyday, and many people will see it, so feel comfortable with it and don’t forget you can always change it later.
